ABOUT THE ACADEMY

Square Root Academy is a S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) based non-profit organization dedicated to educating underrepresented youth on the fundamentals of S.T.E.A.M. while emphasizing collaborative learning, innovation, and academic excellence.

 

This goal is executed under our three key pillars: Community involvement, project based learning, and professional S.T.E.A.M. exposure. We expose Academy scholars to the growing field of S.T.E.A.M at no cost,  while promoting creativity, leadership, and academic excellence.

After School Exploration

Our STEAM Enrichment Series offers after school programming with fun STEAM activities for Scholars 5th through 12th grade.

NGSS Knowledge Gains

All curriculum is built around Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) guaranteeing Scholars are ready for the careers of the future.

Led by Certified Mentors

ALL learning sessions are led by ABET Accredited mentors on no more than a 1:7 mentor to Scholar ratio, to provide the individualized attention Scholars deserve.

As summer starts up, we are officially winding down the first year of our Code and Create series! With classes ranging from 60-90 minutes this program focuses on youth in elementary, middle and secondary afterschool programs. Here we engage scholars in the fundamentals of coding and digital arts using state-of-the-art Apple iPads with the Code and Create 1 program. In addition, serving the higher grades, we utilize an innovative curriculum to coding and industry-level app design using state-of-the-art Apple MacBooks and the SWIFT programming language in the Code and Create 2 program. It’s been nothing short of an amazing year to watch our scholar’s intrigue grow!

Hard Hat Scholars

Building Future Innovators

Build future innovators with this opportunity constructed by Kitchell and Square Root Academy entitled Hard Hat Scholars! Hard Hat Scholars is a FREE Junior Internship Program opportunity for youth who are interested in exploring possibilities in architecture, engineering and construction careers.

Hard Hat Scholars serves dedicated youth who, preferred but not limited to, live in a Sacramento Priority Neighborhood or attend the following:

  • Elk Grove Unified School District Title I School

  • Sacramento City Unified School District Title I School

  • Under-resourced High School within the San Juan Unified School District, Twin Rivers Unified School District or Natomas Unified School District

This is a special opportunity for those who might not have gone camping before nor experienced the Great Outdoors. This event is a way to safely connect, learn STEAM based education and promote Social Justice through the outdoor setting.

More About This Role:

As the impact grows, we are looking for more community dedicated STEAM individuals for one of the most vital roles in Square Root Academy: Scholar Mentor Computer Science (Community Educator). 

 

This position facilitates one or both of the following programs, held 90 minutes a week at local school sites on a M/W or T/Th schedule, generally after the school day and following the academic calendar.

 

Code/Create I (Grades 7-8)

Middle school youth will use state-of-the-art tablets with keyboards to explore fundamentals in both coding and digital art. The ideal Scholar Mentor has some basic familiarity with these concepts, but more importantly, a desire to learn and engage youth with their own learning!

 

 

Code/Create II (Grades 9-12)

High school youth will use brand-new laptops, an engaging platform, and innovative curriculum to learn how to code, ultimately working toward an industry certification known as SWIFT. The ideal Scholar Mentor has taken a couple of programming courses or has programming experience. We provide some time for learning and avenues for support.
